Installing an Underground Dog Fence

Steps for Installing an Underground Dog Fence

Using a network of both hardware and software, an underground dog fence is comprised of an underground wire, a transmitter and a receiver attached to the pet's collar.

1. First, carefully lay out an insulated wire along the designated boundary. It is advisable to mark this invisible boundary with paint or any other recognizable marker so that it would be easy to find if in case there is a need to change the demarcation lines.

2. Bury the wire at least two inches below the ground. Ensure that you will be able to include all areas where you wouldn't want your pet to stray into, such as the gardens or the swimming pool.

3. Next, the transmitter is installed by connecting it to the underground wire. Make sure that the area is dry before doing this.

4. Attach the receiver on the dog's collar.

The receiver usually runs on a 6-volt battery with an average battery life of about three months. Signals are then sent by the transmitter through the underground wire on to the receiver attached to your dog's collar. Once the dog comes near the boundary, a beep is emitted, which tells the dog that he should stop at once. However, if the dog chooses to ignore this sound and carries on, he will then be corrected with a mild shock. This prevents the dog from going any further.

The shock intensities may be preprogrammed depending on your dog's behavior. If he is somewhat stubborn, the intensity can then be increased to make the underground dog fence effective.

After several weeks, the dog will be able to discern what the beeps and the corrections mean and will eventually learn to respect the set boundaries.
